US Belt Buckle - Initials "JB" with Bayonet Tip Marks

SOLD

Item: US Belt Buckle - Initials "JB" with Bayonet Tip Marks
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised large letters "US".  Rear with solder fill and stud (aka "puppy paw") type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a pleasing chocolate brown patina with a few small raised areas that are the result of the mis-use of a bayonet from the rear. The rim is in good shape with one minor dent above the letter "S". The rear has all three belt attachment hooks and near complete complement of stable solder. In addition to the seven triangular bayonet tip puncture marks, there are the initials "JB". None of the bayonet tip holes completely pierce the buckles front brass, though the deepest to the left of the "J" comes close. The buckle still retains a very nice body curve and has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size:  54 x 83 mm.

Reference:  A similar example of this style buckle is found in the following Civil War belt plate reference book:

  • "American Military Belt Plates" by O'Donnell and Campbell, page 313, plate 505.

This page is included in the additional images.

Comments:  The personalization of this buckle is rather unique and it will be an excellent addition to any Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
