The now brown label is in good condition, is flat, and appears to be well-sealed to the rear. All three attachment hooks are present and the plate has no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Winchester, VA. (see rear label and Comments section below)
Approximate size: 54 x 86 mm.
Reference:  American Military Belt Plates by O'Donnell and Campbell, page 313, plate 505.
Comments:  The old paper label on the rear of the plate states the following: "Compliments of  W. SPOTTSWOOD WHITE / WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA / From the Winchester Battle Field. Fought Sept 19 / 64".

According to the very helpful research provided by Nancy Dearing Rossbacher, W. Spottswood White, was a resident of Winchester until his death on April 21, 1927. According to his obituary printed in the Richmond Times Dispatch dated Friday, April 22, 1927, White was an "outstanding churchman and civic leader." For over thirty years, he was superintendent for Loudon Street Presbyterian Church Sunday School and a ruling church elder. Interestingly, his Grandfather was Rev. Dr. William S. White who was pastor of Lexington Presbyterian Church in Lexington, VA., where, at the same church and time, during the mid-1850s, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson organized and taught Sunday school.

The design of this buckle indicates that it was likely manufactured by Emerson Gaylord, a wartime manufacturer who supplied the government and states with belt buckles and other accoutrements. The old label indicating its provenance is the prime feature of this buckle and it would be best displayed with label side visible. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
