Item: US Waist Belt Buckle - Mac Mason Lettering
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and brass arrow belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a flawless smooth, rich brown patina. The rim is complete with one minor dent noticeable primarily from the rear. The rear solder is nearly complete with a slight bit of loss at the rim dent. Minor rear surface solder flaking is now stable. Printed in small black lettering is "FOUND YALEYS MILL JAN. 5-73" (see Comments section below). The buckle has a mild body curve with all three hooks present and in place. There are no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: January 5, 1973, Yahley Mill, Henrico County, VA.
Approximate size: 53 x 85 mm.

Comments: The spelling of "Yahley" by Mason on the buckle is incorrect. Mac Mason was a historian, author, and artist who applied his skillful and artistic lettering to many Civil War artifacts. This buckle is one of those artifacts and is marked with his recognizable printing style. Mac Mason co-authored "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" which is still widely used by diggers and collectors in the identification of Civil War bullets, cartridges, artillery shells and fuzes.
