US Belt Buckle Marked Boyd & Sons / Boston & T. J. Shepard

SOLD

Item: Excavated US Belt Buckle Marked Boyd & Sons / Boston & T. J. Sheppard. (see comments below)
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass, with solder fill, and arrow type attachment hooks.
Condition: Excellent. Its brass front has a rich brown patina. The rear has nearly all of its solder with some very minor surface flaking. The manufacturer's mark of "Boyd & Sons / Boston" and inspectors mark of "T. J. SHEPARD" is mostly visible (see additional close-up images). The buckle has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 56 x 87 mm.
Comments: I cannot stress how difficult it is to recover a belt plate such as this with its rear marks. Not all US belt, cartridge box, and eagle plates are stamped with a manufacturer's or inspector's mark, in fact, the majority of them weren't. Furthermore, while recovering a belt plate with the manufacture's stamp of Boyd & Son's / Boston is a rarity, one that includes the inspector's stamp of "T. J. Shepard" is even rarer. This difficult to find maker marked belt plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
