US Belt Buckle - Manufacturer Marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN"

SOLD

Item: Non-Excavated US oval waist belt buckle manufacturer marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN".
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass, with raised stamped letters "US", rear with solder fill and stud type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, non-excavated. Its brass front, with the large fat letters "US", has a mellow toned brass patina with small nicks resulting from period use. The rim is complete but does have a small dent above the letters "US". The rear has a complete complement of solder and all three belt attachment hooks. The manufacturer's mark of "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN" is stamped into the rear with nearly every letter still visible. The buckle has a body curve with both ends having slight inward bends from period use. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Approximate size: 55 x 86 mm.
Comments:  Though the Smith mark is the most common of manufacturer's stamps, most buckles were not stamped making those that are, a rarity. This belt buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
