US Belt Buckle - Ship Wreck Recovery - Marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN"

SOLD

Item: US Belt Buckle - Shipwreck Recovery - Marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN".
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass, with raised stamped letters "US", rear with solder fill and stud type attachment hooks.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass front has a yellow-brown patina. The rear has a complete complement of solder and all three belt attachment hooks. The manufacturer's stamp of "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN" is stamped into the rear with every letter clearly visible. There are no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Off Little River, SC.
Approximate size: 54 x 85 mm.
Comments:  According to the former collector's notes, this plate was recovered "...off a Federal sunken ship off Little River, S.C. ..." Though the Smith mark is the most common of manufacturer's stamps, most plates recovered do not have any manufacturer's stamp and, finding one from a shipwreck that is stamped, is particularly rare. This plate is will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate, shipwreck or general relic collection.
