US Belt Buckle - Stud Hooks

SOLD

Item: US Belt Buckle - Stud Hooks
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised large letters "US".  Rear with solder fill and stud (aka "puppy paw") type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a very pleasing dull brass-copper patina with only a few very small dings from period use. The rim has minor dents but otherwise is in great shape. The rear has nearly all of its solder with partial surface flaking in areas of the rim, however, these areas are stable. All three attachment hooks are present and the plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size:  54 x 84 mm.
Reference:  American Military Belt Plates by O'Donnell and Campbell, page 313, plate 505.
Comments:  The design of this buckle indicates that it was likely manufactured by Emerson Gaylord, a wartime manufacturer who supplied the government and states with belt buckles and other accoutrements. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
