Item: US Waist Belt Buckle for Dragoon (Rifleman) Enlisted
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and stud type belt attachment hooks situated behind the letter "S" for left hand use.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its brass front has a rich brown patina. The rim is in good shape with the exception of a small break and minor bending at the "S" end. The rear has a nearly full complement of solder with all three attachment that includes a section of leather. Somewhat hidden under part of the leather section is an area where missing solder has been filled in with what appears to be clear epoxy. The fill area extends under the leather approximately 3/8-inch from the rim. Also on the rear, in very small plum colored ink, is printed "SHILOH".
Recovered: Shiloh, TN.
Approximate size: 56 x 87 mm.
Reference: A similar, but not exact, example is pictured and described in:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: The buckle was likely struck by the digger's tool when recovered and an attempt to repair the rim and missing solder was made. This buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
