US Belt Buckle with Large Leather Belt Remnant

SOLD

Item: US Belt Buckle with Large Leather Belt Remnant
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US".  Rear with solder fill and arrow type belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass front has a very pleasing even greenish-brown patina and the distinctive large letters "US". The rim of the plate is undamaged. The rear retains two portions of the original leather belt. Both ends of the belt are solidly affixed to the rear of the plate, with one end under the single belt tongue, with the other end under the arrow style attachment hooks. The leather is curled upwards in various areas. Due to the presence of the stiff leather covering much of the rear, it is difficult to determine its overall condition. What I can determine however, is that there is both solder surface flaking and build up. The weight of the plate leads me to believe that most of the solder is present. Other than what is mentioned above, the plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Fredericksburg, VA area.
Approximate size:  57 x 87 mm.
Comments:  In the rare instances where buckles are recovered with a piece of leather attached, typically only one end of the belt is present and that is usually under the two arrow or stud type belt attachment hooks. This raises the question as to why this belt was attached at both ends?? The biggest problem you will have with this plate is figuring out which way to display it, showing its beautiful face or, showing the rear leather, both will be excellent choices. This handsome plate, with its leather remnant, will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
