Item: US Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition: Fair, excavated. Its smooth brass front, with raised letters "US", has a mixed reddish-brown metallic patina. Portions of the of the plate's rim is missing, however the letters "US" are present with the exception of a small portion of the left serif of the "U". There are a couple of very small shallow holes in the brass to the right of the letter "S". The rear of the remaining front retains nearly all of its original solder which is smooth. The attachment loops are missing. There are no cracks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 52 x 84 mm. (measurement varies due to condition)
Comments: Due to coloring, wear, general appearance and condition, this plate may have been a water find. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
