Item: US Cartridge Box Plate - Carved Letter "P"
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition: Good, excavated, iron attachment loops missing. Its brass front, with the raised large thick letters "US", has a dark taupe patina and a mild rust-through in the center between the "U" and "S". The rim is complete but does have small bends, breaks and cracks primarily as a result of damage to the rear rim areas. The rear solder is mostly complete with flaking and loss to a couple of areas along the rim. A large letter "P" is carved into the solder. The plate is solid with no repairs.
Recovered: Quantico, VA area.
Approximate size: 57 x 87 mm.
Reference: An image of a similar, but not exact cartridge box plate is found in the following Civil War relic reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: This excavated US cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the Virginia digger. Included in the additional images is an image of the digger (on left), with his hunting buddies and their detectors dating to the 1970-80s. Also included is an image showing its use. The plate will be an excellent addition to any Civil War accoutrement plate or general relic collection.
