This excavated brass US plate is the front of either from a US waist belt buckle or a cartridge box plate. The brass has a rich brown patina and a crease that extends the length of the plate. The rim is incomplete. There are cracks in the area of the crease and elsewhere however the plate remains remarkably solid. Neither its solder backing or attachment hooks remain. It measures approximately 56 x 87 mm and was recovered from the Quantico, VA area. The plate was acquired directly from the Virginia digger. Included in the additional images is an image of the digger (on left), with his hunting buddies and their detectors dating to the 1970-80s. Also, an additional image is included showing its use for both a belt buckle and cartridge box plate. The plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
