US Cartridge Box Plate

SOLD

Item: US Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear has solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition:
Very good, non-excavated, iron attachment loops missing. Its brass front, with its distinctive tall letters, has a copper patina. The rim is complete. The rear has a complete complement of solder. The remnants of a very thin layer of old clear epoxy are present on the rear. The plate has no cracks, bends or repairs.
Approximate size:
 57 x 88 mm.
Reference: An image of a similar, but not exact cartridge box plate is found in the following Civil War relic reference book:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 6, figure 1.

See above page in additional images.

Comments: This non-excavated US cartridge box plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated plate or general relic collection.
