US Cartridge Box Plate - Flat Bottom "U" - 15th Mass.

SOLD

Item: Excavated US cartridge box plate.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill.
Condition:
Good, excavated. Its brass front, with raised letters "US", has a very pleasing brown patina. There is a very small break in the surface just above the lower portion of the "U". The rear has nearly all of its solder with the exception of a small area of loss and a dent in the rim at the "S" end.  Its iron attachment loops are no longer present.
Recovered:
 Brandy Station, VA area.
Approximate size:
 57 x 88 mm.
Comments:
According to O'Donnell and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates" reference book, US plates with the flat bottom "U", due to their recovery location where Massachusetts troops have been present, have been positively associated with 15th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.  An example of this type lettering on a US buckle can be found in the above mentioned book on page 305, plate 489.  While I have offered US buckles with the flat bottom "U", this is the first cartridge box plate that I have been able to offer. This lettering style is seldom encountered and this box plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
