US Cartridge Box Plate - Manufacturer Marked "Boyd & Sons / Boston"

SOLD

Item: US Cartridge Box Plate - Manufacturer Marked "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON"
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition:
Good, excavated. Its brass front, with its raised letters "US", has a very pleasing even brown patina. The rim is complete. The rear has a complete complement of solder. The attachment loops are present and complete with one bent over to the rear. Stamped into the rear is the manufacturer's mark of "BOYD AND SONS / BOSTON" with a portion of "BOYD" covered by rust staining. Also printed on the rear in blue ink is "BETHESDA CHURCH 1963" along with "FOUND BY E V SMITH" representing the recovery location, date and who recovered it. Remnants of old masking tape also found on the rear in the area of the bent over loop. The plate has no cracks or repairs.
Recovered:
 1963 Bethesda Church, VA
Approximate size:
 56 x 88 mm.
Comments:
This excavated US cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded the plate’s date and location of recovery. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
