Item: US Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition: Fair, excavated, iron attachment loops missing. The body of the plate is concaved. Its brass front, with its raised letters "US", has a chocolate brown patina partially covered with tan soil residue. There are several freeze cracks in the brass and portions of the rim missing. The majority of the rear solder is solid and complete with portions missing in areas of the rim. On the rear in faint pencil is printed "ALPINE STATION". The plate has not been repaired.
Recovered: Alpine Station, Morgan County, WV.
Approximate size: 53 x 85 mm.

Comments: This excavated US cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the digger. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated plate or general relic collection.
