Item: US Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, iron attachment loops present and straight-up. Its brass front, with its raised large letters "US", has a rich brown patina with areas of lightly encrusted tan color residue. The rim is complete with no issues. The rear solder has a near complete complement of solder with mild flaking in areas near the rim. The loops are rusty but stable. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Spotsylvania County, VA.
Approximate size: 57 x 89 mm.
Reference: An image of a similar, but not exact cartridge box plate is found in the following Civil War relic reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: This excavated US cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the local Virginia digger. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated plate or general relic collection.
