Item: US Cartridge Box Plate - Contractor Marked "W. H. SMITH / BROOKLYN"
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron wire attachment loops.
Condition: Very good, excavated, loops present. Its brass front, with the raised large thick letters "US", has an uncleaned surface and a dark taupe patina. The rim is complete with only a very small dent in the six o'clock position. The rear has a near complete complement of solder with light surface flaking. A partial contractor's mark of "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN" visible. Both loops are complete and, while rusty and partially degraded, are straight-up. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown.
Approximate size: 55 x 87 mm.

Comments: This Smith marked cartridge box plate is from the collection of Joseph "Abe" Leisch. Joe, a lifelong Civil War Civil War relic collector, was known for his stunning resemblance to Abraham Lincoln and stirring portrayal of the president in feature films. Films included are "Appointment with Destiny" (1971), "They've Killed President Lincoln!" (1971) and "Antietam Visit" (1982).
This cartridge box plate will be an excellent addition to any Civil War maker marked plate, accoutrement plate, or general relic collection.
