US Cartridge Box Plate - Maker Marked "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON"

SOLD

Item: US Cartridge Box Plate - Maker Marked "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON"
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass front, with raised letters "US", has a chocolate brown patina. The rim is fully intact with no breaks. The rear has a complete complement of solder with only very mild surface flaking primarily in the area of the rim. Well stamped into the rear is the manufacturer's mark of "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON" with every letter clearly visible. Both attachment loops are present and straight up. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 56 x 88 mm.
Comments: Most plates recovered are not marked with the manufacturer’s stamp and finding one is always a bonus for any Civil War relic hunter. Of the handful of known plate manufacturers who marked their plates, “Boyd & Sons / Boston” is one of the more common marks encountered. If you are looking for exceptional quality in both the plate, as well as the maker mark stamping, then this Boyd marked cartridge box plate is for you. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
