Item: US Cartridge Box Plate - Large Size - Marked "W. H. SMITH / BROOKLYN" - High Quality
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron wire attachment loops.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated. Its brass front, with the raised letters "US", has a smooth surface, with a very pleasing dull brass patina. The rear has a complete complement of solder with both loops complete and straight-up. The contractor's stamp of "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN" is clear and complete with every letter visible. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Approximate size: 55 x 87 mm.

Comments: This high-quality large size box plate, with its strong manufacturer's stamp, would be a great addition to any cartridge box that needs a plate and an excellent addition to any Civil War maker marked plate, accoutrement plate, or general relic collection.
