Item: US Waist Belt Buckle - Rare "E. GAYLORD" Marked Small Size - Catlett Brother's Collection
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill, and brass attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front, with its raised letters "US", has an even rich brown patina with yellowed soil nicely highlighting the letters and rim. The rim is in great shape. The rear solder is stable and nearly complete with minor wear at one edge. Both belt attachment hooks are present with a bit of soil still lodged under the arrow hook. The contractor's stamp of "E. GAYLORD" is present with every letter visible. Baby powder has been used to highlight the letters. No cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 40 x 71 mm.
Reference: A similar example is pictured and described in the following Civil War reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: This small size US waist belt buckle marked "E. GAYLORD" was acquired directly from the Catlett brothers when they sold their plate collection in 2018. The Catlett's (Roger, Earl, & Allan) lived on the Chancellorsville Battlefield and began hunting in the 1940's. This hard-to-find buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War accoutrement plate or general relic collection.
