Item: Virginia Sword Belt Buckle
Design: Virginia's 1776 coat of arms on a stippled field, with the figures of Virtus standing over Tyranny encircled on a lined field. The state motto of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" is above with "VIRGINIA" below.
Construction: Cast brass pressed into a metal die for extra fine detail. Rear with brazed on tongue and stamped bench number "380".
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated. The brass has a darkened untouched patina. Lightly carved on the front to the left of Virtus in period lettering are letters "MA", with "C" to the right of Virtus. Multiple letters and carvings are found on the rear with what appear to be letters "MAC", "AP", "R" "U" and possibly others. There are three parallel lines that include additional markings and a circle (see additional images for close-ups). The tongue is present and solidly affixed. File marks are visible along portions of the plate's edge. The plate has an overall body curve with no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Found in 1963 behind a mantle when renovations were being made to a residence in Staunton, VA.
Approximate size: 51 x 87 mm.
Comments: This belt plate was recently acquired from the gentleman that was actually making the renovations to the residence mentioned above in 1963. A letter signed by him detailing the buckle's recovery will be included with the purchase. This fine Confederate buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
