Item: VMI - Virginia Military Institute Cadet Button - R & W Robinson
Backmark: "R & W. ROBINSON" dm; on ribbon with an eagle between the swallowtail ends.
Construction: Low convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 21 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. The button front has a gilt covered brown patina. The rear is moderately pushed. There are no cracks, breaks, repairs or other pushes.

Comments: It is the desirable R & W Robinson back mark that is typically found on excavated examples of these buttons from Civil War sites. This die variant features the spear passing through the "E" of “Cadet”. Click this link to read about VMI's roll during the Civil War.
