Volunteer Maine Militia "VMM" Cartridge Box Plate

SOLD

Item: Excavated Volunteer Maine Militia "VMM" oval cartridge box plate.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "VMM".  Rear with solder fill and remnants of iron wire attachment loops.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a very pleasing chocolate brown patina and is nearly flawless. The rim is complete with minor period bending. The rear has nearly all of its solder which shows somewhat of an uneven pour of solder. The digger used white-out or white paint to indicate its recovery location of "White Oak Swamp". This solid plate is missing its iron attachment loops and has not been repaired and comes directly from the digger's family.
Comments:  This plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: In the fall of 1999 on a ridge in White Oak Swamp, VA.
Approximate size:  57 x 88 mm.
