Item: Volunteer Maine Militia "VMM" Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were attached to the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "VMM". Rear iron wire attachment loops (now missing) affixed with solder at either end.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a very pleasing chocolate brown patina. The plate has very minor body bending and as mentioned above the two iron loops are no longer present. There are no cracks, breaks or repairs.
Recovered: Cedar Mountain, VA area.
Approximate size: 57 x 87 mm.
Reference: Other VMM cartridge box plates are found pictured in the following Civil War reference book:
See above page in the additional images.
Comments: This VMM cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the family of the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
