Large Wood Drive-In Fuze Adaptor

This large tapered wood drive-in fuze adaptor is in very good condition and measures approximately 1.85 inches at its top diameter and 1.5 inches at its bottom diameter.  Its length is approximately 1.93 inches.  This adaptor would have been driven into an artillery shell to hold a paper time fuse of varying burn times. According to Charles H. Jones' author of "Artillery Fuses of the Civil War", "these simple inserts are the oldest types of artillery fuses employed during the Civil War." and "between 1861-1865, wood fuse plugs were used by both sides but to a larger extent by the South". Clearly unused, non-excavated, and likely a Bannerman piece, this wood fuze adaptor will be an excellent display piece in any artillery collection.
