Smilin' Snake Eye
Doug Holder and Quindy Robertson were hunting a U.S. infantry camp used by Ind. and Ohio troops for 12 days in Dec.1862 following the Battle of Hartsville, TN. where Doug recovered this cool carved snake or lizard head bullet. The next issue of North South Trader will have Quindy's article about our hunting that camp during February 2012.

We were hunting the CSA camp where I dug the KY button on Monday. My buddy dug a .58 and it was in a clod. Since I was going to write another article for N S Trader, I had my little camera in my cargo pants. I snapped a pic and he pulled the bullet from the clod. I turned around to go to my detector and he said "Look at that". I snapped another pic of the lead oxide impression in the clod in the moist dirt. It dried and disappeared quickly. Regards, Quindy.

Josh and I hunted Morgan's camp at Hartsville for 4.5 hours today and found a few relics. Josh dug the iron ball puller, and carved . 58 cal. acorn like bullet (about 100 yards from where I dug mine), a "57" base marked Enfield. I just had buck 'n balls, balls, a Burnside cartridge end, Burnside bullet, 4 .69 balls, and a dropped 3 ringer. Note the bent up bottle cap looking piece above the 3 ringer and Burnside in the upper right. Now, look at the second picture. That the underside of the bent up piece. Tell Mr. William it's a top piece of a KENTUCKY 3 pc. button. The pic is of the gilded underside. The button top being bent over helped preserve the gilding on the underside. I think Robert McDaniel can make it look better and he agrees. I'm hoping it's the Staff Officer version.. No KY buttons were ever discovered in that camp (discovered by Donnie & Julia Vaughn) that we know of and a Texas cuff is the only other state button recovered there and probably lost by one of Col. Gano's Texas Rangers camped with Morgan there in the autumn of 1862. FYI, Quindy.

The following plate was just recovered as described below by Quindy Robertson:
"Doug and I went relic hunting near Carthage this morning (October 29, 2010) and only found 9 pieces of canister shot. We returned to Hartsville and ate lunch. I ran some errands and came home to check some cows who were calving. Doug (Holder) said he was going to hunt an old home on his way back to Lafayette, TN. I think he did O.K. Atlanta style with all 3 hooks intact."
Boy, I'll agree with that! Congrats to Doug Holder of Tennessee

Quindy Robertson recovers his own family's history.
"I dug a good one Tuesday at a Gen. John Hunt Morgan 1863 Camp not too far from home. It is a 16 mm cuff with good shank and solid with the "Lambert & Mast/Philada" back mark. Larry Hicklen says that it is the only Alabama artifact ever recovered there. Morgan's troops were from TN, KY, & Texas at this camp. Only 2 state buttons were dug there and they were pre war KY buttons as far as we know. I had 2 Great, Great Uncles enlisted with him there. One formally enlisted at that camp as I have his papers. Enjoy, Quindy."
