George Tiemann & Co.

George Tiemann & Co. is one of the oldest continuously operating manufacturers and suppliers of surgical instruments in the United States.

In 1826 German immigrant George Tiemann (1795–1868) founded the business and opened his first shop at 35 Chatham Street in New York City.

In 1833 the shop relocated to 63 Chatham Street, where Tiemann began manufacturing scissors and specialized surgical instruments by 1841.

During the 1840s–1850s Tiemann helped shift American medical preference away from imported European tools by proving domestic workshops could produce high-quality surgical implements.

During the Civil War the firm, renamed George Tiemann & Co. after partners Frederick A. Stohlmann and Edward Pfarre joined, became a primary supplier of medical equipment for Union forces.
