THE BATTLE OF STEPHENSON'S DEPOT

The battle of Stephenson's Depot was fought on June 15, 1863, when Confederate forces under Lt. Gen. Richard Ewell sought to cut off the retreat of a Federal army under Maj. Gen. Robert Milroy. The bulk of the fighting occurred along the Old Charles Town Road, where a handful of Rebels bravely held off vastly superior forces until reinforcements arrived. The appearance of these reinforcements marked the turning point of the battle, and led to the surrender of nearly 3,000 Union troops - a substantial portion of Milroy's army.
