Item: 24 Pounder Spherical Shell
Fusing: Wood fuse adaptor plug.
Sabot: Wooden cup
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 16.8 pounds. Diameter: 5.68 inches.
Condition: Good, excavated, with light-moderate pitting. Its fuse adaptor and sabot are no longer present. The shell has been deactivated.
Gun: 24 pounder smoothbore.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", due to the fact that the Federal troops had ceased using wood drive-in fuses in shells prior to the Civil War, there is a high probability that that this is a Confederate shell. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
