Andrew Johnson Impeachment Ticket

SOLD

"The galleries of the Senate Chamber were filled to capacity on March 5, 1868, as the Senate began its proceedings for the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. Popular interest in the trial was so intense that the Senate, for the first time in its history, issued gallery passes, beginning a practice that continues to the present. On May 16, the Senate voted on one article of impeachment, falling just one vote short of conviction and removal from office. Ten days later, the Senate voted on two more articles, with the same result. On May 26, the Senate acquitted the president and adjourned the Court of Impeachment. Johnson was not re-nominated for the presidency in 1868 but returned to the Senate in 1875, serving until his death on July 31 of that year."

Here is something you won't see every day and, an interestingly appropriate offering for the times we are currently witnessing. This is an original ticket for a seat in the gallery of the U. S. Senate Chamber to view the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865-1869. Johnson was the first president to be impeached and was eventually acquitted by one vote. To read more about his impeachment, click on his linked name above. The ticket includes its original stub which is now detached. Printed on heavy card stock in faded gold lettering, on a field of blue, is: "U. S. SENATE / Impeachment of the President / ADMIT THE BEARER / MAY 9TH 1868. / GALLERY. / Geo. T. Brown / Sergeant at Arms". Printed on the stub is: "To be taken up at MAIN ENTRANCE / No.  72 (stamped numerals) / U. S. SENATE". The ticket was printed by Philp and Solomons, publishers and printers located, according to an advertisement of 1865, at 332 Penn. Ave. bet. 9th & 10th Streets, Washington, D.C. Today the J. Edgar Hoover Building, headquarters of the FBI, is on the site. The ticket and stub measure approximately 2.88 x 4.83 inches. It is in very good condition and a very unique piece of American history. It will come in a heavy duty clear acid free envelope for preservation and display and will be an excellent addition to any Andrew Johnson, presidential, or post-Civil War general relic collection.
