Item: Baltimore City Police Coat Button
Backmark:
"CANFIELD . BRO & CO. / BALTIMORE." dm.
Design: Initials "BCP" on a lined field surrounded by a wreath.
Construction: High convex, three-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. The front is covered with gilt with very minor spots of verdigris. The rim is complete. The backmark is clearly visible. No pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs. 
Recovered: Gaines Mill, Hanover County, VA at a Confederate hospital site.

Comments: This button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection. 

Additional Information: The Scovill Manufacturing Company produced uniform buttons that featured the retailer or distributor backmark of "CANFIELD . BRO & CO. / BALTIMORE." and "CANFIELD & BROTHER". According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, on page 313, "Collectors have excavated several of these Scovill-made examples at Civil War military sites".
