Carved, Flattened, and Re-Shaped Bullets and Lead

SOLD

This group of excavated carved, flattened, and re-shaped bullets and lead consist of eight items recovered from various central Virginia areas as noted on each item. Every now and then bullets are recovered with whittle marks or, in rare instances, intricate carvings, hand-crafted by soldiers using their pocket knives just to pass the time. While some of the carvings or re-shaping of bullet lead were objects of art, some were more utilitarian such as a nipple protector, button, or poker chip. Included in this group is a large flattened 3-ring bullet, a poker chip, two nipple protectors, a fishing hook, a button, a flattened bullet with two nail holes, and another flattened bullet. The recovery locations of six pieces were identified by the digger. The rings of the large flattened 3-ring bullet are identified on the bullet with the word "rings", in two places, with arrows pointing to either edge. Also marked on this bullet is "Flattened 3-ring bullet located at old house site off Quaker Rd. Dinwiddie Co.". The poker chip is marked "Poker Chip Trevilians Station". The fishing hook is marked "Beaver Dam Cr." The button is marked "Cumberland Landing". The flattened bullet with two nail holes is marked "Lomax - CSA position Trevilians Station" and one of the nipple protectors is marked "N. Anna R.". These relics were acquired directly from the immediate family of the now deceased digger who hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia and adjacent states for several decades. These excavated relics and their display case will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet, campsite, or general relic collection.
