Confederate "D" Guard Knife

SOLD

This massive Confederate "D" guard knife has an approximate overall length measurement of 21-3/4 inches with a blade length of 17-1/4 inch. Its blade width near the guard is approximately 1-3/4 inches. It was acquired directly from the digger who recovered it decades ago in an area occupied by the 35th Georgia Camp French, Evansport, VA during the winter of 1861-1862. The knife, though pitted and missing its wood handle, is in good solid condition. The guard is solidly attached to the tang and there is chipping along the knife edge. It was clear coated long ago so as to prevent any further deterioration. According to the digger "a good overview of the 35th Georgia's occupying Camp French can be read pages 9-25 in John Fox's book "Red Clay to Richmond, Trail of the 35th Georgia Infantry Regiment, CSA". This regiment had suffered some the worst disease and living conditions during their time at Evansport." An image of the digger (left), with his relic hunting buddies and their detectors, is included in additional images of this knife. Many images of Confederate soldiers show them holding or carrying these large knives, and an example of one has also been included in the additional images, but is not included with the sale of the knife. The example offered in this listing will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War edged weapon or general relic collection.
