Item: Federal 6-Pounder Case-Shot Shell - Visible Support Plug
Construction: Cast iron.
Fuzing: Bormann time fuze (not present).
Approximate size: Weight: 4 pounds. Diameter: 3.57 inches.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. The shell's surface is very smooth with nearly no pitting and a visible mold seam. Its Bormann time fuze is no longer present leaving an exposed iron support plug. Loose case-shot can be heard rattling inside the shell when gently shaken. The shell has been deactivated and has no repairs. It has also been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron and is ready for display.
Recovered: Hampshire County, WV.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the presence of the iron support plug indicates Federal manufacture. This 6-pounder case-shot shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
