Item: Model 1840 Musicians Sword Dated 1863 - C. Roby
Construction: Brass handle, guard, and pommel with iron blade.
Approximate size: Overall length: 34-1/4 inches. Blade length 28 inches.
Condition: Very good, non-excavated. No bends, cracks, breaks, or repairs. The sword has a very pleasing overall darkened patina. The blade does have minor pitting and wear primarily in an approximate nine inch area extending from the tip towards the handle. On one side of the ricasso is the manufacturer's stamp of "C. ROBY / WEST CHELMSFORD MS." which is partially visible. On the other side is stamped "U.S. / 1863 / F.S.S." (the  letter "F" is not visible). The letters "F.S.S." are the initials of the government inspector, Frederic S. Strong. The brass guard is also stamped with the inspector's initials "F.S.S."
