Item: North Carolina Military Institute Cuff Button
Backmark: "SCOVILL MFG CO" (dm)
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 13 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. This solid button is loaded with gilt with just below hints of green coloring. The back mark is present but difficult to see however, there is just enough key lettering visible to determine that it is was manufactured by Scovill. It has no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Sailor's Creek, VA area.
Reference: Tice: NCS277As; Albert: SU 272
Comments: The button design features a hornet's nest with "NC" at sides on a lined field, and "MILITARY INSTITUTE" around the edge. According to the button reference book "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, "D. H. Hill, later a confederate general, established the school in 1859. Some cadets manned an artillery piece in the Civil War's first land battle at Big Bethel, Virginia in June of 1861." Though not recommended, it is likely that additional gilt may be brought out with proper cleaning.
This button was acquired directly from the digger's family who resided in the area of Sailor's Creek, VA. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
