Item: North Carolina "Sunburst" Coat Button
Backmark: Blank
Design: A seven-pointed raised star or "sunburst" on stippled field with border. The raised letters "NC" in center on lined field within raised ring.
Construction: Low convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, shank missing (see comments below). Even, dark near black patina. The button has no bends, cracks, or repairs.
Recovered: Richmond, VA area.
Reference: Tice: NC242A1; Albert: NC 16
Comments: The majority of this classification of North Carolina sunburst buttons are recovered without their shanks. This is primarily due to its non-footed shank having been spot brazed or soldered to the button's rear resulting in a fragile design. This example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
