Item: US Cartridge Box Plate from the Sydney C. Kerksis Collection with Original Envelope
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, iron attachment loops present. Its brass front, with its raised large letters "US", has a very pleasing chocolate brown patina with minor soil residue. The rim is complete with no issues. The rear has a complete complement of solder with the exception of minor surface flaking. Its iron attachment loops are present, both of which are nearly straight up. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs. The envelope is in good condition and printed on the front is: "North Anna / Aug 61 / CBP / 5th AC Line / (illegible)".
Recovered: August 1961 North Anna, VA.
Approximate size: 55 x 88 mm.
Comments: Sydney C. Kerksis, a legendary early digger, stored his plates in small manila envelopes upon which he recorded their recovery information. He authored one of the first great works on military plates titled "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874", known to some diggers and collectors as the "Buckle Bible". (a copy is currently available for purchase on this website in the Books section. UPDATE: The copy of this book listed on my website just sold, but I do have another in inventory). This excavated US cartridge box plate with envelope from the Sydney C. Kerksis collection will be an excellent addition to any excavated plate or general relic collection.
