Brass Saddle Shield

SOLD

This excavated saddle shield is constructed of cast brass which now has a woodsy green patina and some very mild period bending. It measures approximately 1-5/8 inches in width and 2-3/16 inches in length. There are no cracks, breaks, repairs. An example of the same type shield is pictured in "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 140, item 2. This page is included in the additional images. It was recovered in Garysburg, NC and acquired directly from the digger, Robert Braswell, Jr. of Gaston, NC., who recovered many fine relics from both North Carolina and Virginia over several decades. Learn more about Robert and his relic detecting by clicking on his name above. This saddle shield will be an excellent addition to any Civil War horse tack, cavalry, or general relic collection.
